An Indian rocket with the over two ton South Asian Satellite blasted off from the Sriharikota spaceport on Friday evening.

Precisely at 4.57 p.m., the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-F09) rose into sky from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre at the spaceport in Andhra Pradesh.

The Rs. 235-crore communications satellite will be propelled into space by the GSLV. The total cost of the project was Rs. 450 crore.

ISRO took over three years to built the 2,230-kg communication satellite, which will cater to seven SAARC nations, including India.

While seven SAARC nations will use the satellite, Pakistan is not participating in the project.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the launch of the satellite will be a "priceless gift" to neighbouring countries.
